About Us

The Centre for Indian Social Studies (CISS) is an independent academic foundation established on 23rd September 2023, dedicated to deepening the understanding of Indian philosophy, politics and society through critical scholarship and public engagement. Rooted in a strong commitment to rational inquiry and the promotion of scientific and academic temper, CISS seeks to foster a culture of intellectual rigor and reflective discourse in both academic and public spheres.

A core focus of CISS is the scholarly academication of South Indian political philosophies and ideas. The Centre works to explore, interpret and contextualize these traditions within broader Indian and global frameworks, ensuring that regional political thought receives the analytical attention it deserves. Through the translation and publication of key works by Indian thinkers, especially those whose contributions have remained underrepresented in mainstream academic discourse, CISS aims to make complex political and philosophical ideas accessible to a wider audience, including students, scholars and the general public.

In addition to research and publication, CISS is actively involved in the preservation and archiving of historical materials. This includes rare books, newspapers, magazines and other documents that shed light on South Indian popular culture, philosophy, politics and society. These materials are carefully preserved in both digital and physical formats, supporting long-term access and ensuring that vital records of the region’s social and intellectual history remain available to future generations.

CISS regularly organizes seminars, conferences and workshops that provide a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and critical engagement with contemporary issues. These events bring together scholars, educators, students, and public intellectuals to foster meaningful conversations rooted in evidence-based research and humanistic values.

The Centre also maintains libraries, reading rooms, and open-access digital archives as public resources, reflecting its broader mission to support academic learning and cultivate a knowledge-driven society. By providing these spaces and tools, CISS encourages continuous learning and informed participation in public life. Recognizing excellence is another important part of the Centre’s mission. Through the conferment of awards and fellowships, CISS honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to education, literature and social studies, celebrating work that aligns with its commitment to intellectual integrity, social justice, and public enlightenment.

Overall, the Centre for Indian Social Studies stands as a vital institution working at the intersection of research, education, and cultural preservation. By promoting the study of Indian thought alongside a commitment to scientific and academic temper, CISS plays an essential role in shaping a more reflective, informed, and inclusive intellectual landscape.
